WAI is one of the leading
firms in assessing and quantifying blast risk to structures. The
firm was one of the first to transfer probabilistic seismic hazard
and risk techniques to the field of blast engineering. Relying on
the classical definition of risk, WAI has developed a blast risk
quantification procedure that is based on assessing threat occurrence
likelihood, evaluating structural vulnerability to the defined threats,
and characterizing facility importance. The procedure was successfully
used by the Port Authority of New York and New Jersey to prioritize,
from a risk standpoint, their portfolio of facilities, and then
conduct cost-benefit analysis to rank and select several blast mitigation
projects at the various facilities. The procedure is currently being
used for other major infrastructure projects, and is being adapted
for estimating insured building losses due to blast events for a
major US-based property and casualty insurer.
