For structures in zones
of high seismicity, and particularly for unusual structures, peer
review by an experienced structural engineer is undertaken to enhance
the quality of the design and to provide additional assurance regarding
the performance of the completed project. For certain types of structures,
such as base isolated structures, peer review is mandated by regulation.
Our principals bring a breadth of knowledge to the peer review
process that has been gained from experience in the design of structures
and active participation in the development of seismic regulations.
Several of our structural engineering peers consider us the peer
reviewer of choice, based on the considered review that we provide.
Examples of current and recent peer reviews of major projects include:
U.S. Courthouse, San Diego, CA
The R&C/WAI Joint Venture is providing seismic (and blast) peer
review of the U.S. Courthouse in San Diego. The courthouse will
feature an elliptical lobby on a translucent glass base as well
as a multi-story glass tower. The design of the building will emphasize
architectural grandeur as well as functionality, with a canopied
entrance and grand staircase entrance facing a central street, and
new landscaped public plaza. The anticipated lateral resisting system
will be a combination of steel and concrete, with high performance
unitized curtainwall systems.
Washington Mutual Tower,
Seattle, Washington
R&C is providing the Seismic Peer Review of a 550-foot tall
office and museum building for the City of Seattle, with a seismic-force-resisting
system using reinforced concrete walls, steel buckling-restrained
braced frames, steel moment frames, and concentric braced frames.
The building exceeds the height limit of the Uniform Building Code
for concrete wall or braced frame systems. The R&C scope includes
validating the concept and detailed design criteria, defining code
equivalency in design approaches, and reviewing the design.
South Terminal Seismic Evaluation & Upgrade, Anchorage
Airport, Anchorage, Alaska
R&C is providing Seismic Peer Review services, reviewing “Tier
1” and
detailed seismic evaluations, and all phases of the seismic retrofit
design. The terminal and concourse buildings include several adjacent
structures that use concrete moment frames, concrete walls, steel
moment frames and steel braces frames.
War Memorial Opera House, City of San Francisco,
CA
R&C provided peer review services for the seismic upgrade of
the War Memorial Opera House. Built in 1932 and designed by the
architect Arthur Brown Jr. as one of a matching pair to the neighboring
War Memorial Veteran’s Building, the Opera House is one of
the five monumental buildings located in the San Francisco Civic
Center National Landmark District.
We look forward to assisting federal agencies in achieving improvements
to the quality of their projects through effective peer review.
